The Touchline – Pressing Basic Principle

The touchline is the best defender. Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola’s opinion on the use of the touchline as part of a pressing strategy. Also echoed in this article on his mentor Van Gaal.

Van Gaal’s teams press in a fluid shape, compacting central areas and forcing opponents wide, where the touchline is used to restrict space for opponents before intensifying the pressure.

The problem begins by passing the ball to the fullbacks. You only have quarter of the pitch left. That’s all the full-back has and once the opponent starts putting pressure, he has no option but to play it back to the goalie. Johan Cruyff

Another of Pep’s influences talking about the use of the touchline as a defender.
